The title track of his debut album was originally written for a play Tapio wrote and directed in 2008. It’s based on a poem by late great bohemian author Arto Melleri. For this recording the original song was extended with a new vocal coda and guitar solo. Excluding drums Tapio plays all instruments himself.
December 5th, track 5: Juhani Valkama (with Tapio Ylinen) – Paska Jätkä
Songwriter Juhani Valkama writes acerbic songs about us poor human beings facing the impossebilities of life. This song is no exception, with the title referring to “a shitty person”. Fellow songwriter Tapio Ylinen plays a Mark Knopfler-esque guitar solo on this track.
When “The Violence Musical” for premiered in the fall of 2008 it was called “the theatre event of the season in Tampere”. The topical musical dealt with different aspects of war, peace and violence with a powerful stage production and beautiful, melodic rock music.
The regime of Vladimir Putin receives its fair share of critique. Unfortunately these themes are as topical as ever, now almost ten years later.

Tapio Ylinen has received a recognition from the Finnish Film Foundation. He is to receive a grant for his feature film script “The Talented One”, a story about a washed-up rock star who gets a second chance in the music business when he is chosen to mentor a talented but restless young rock singer. The script is Ylinen’s first feature film script. He received a master of arts degree in film screenwriting from the University of Salford, Manchester in 2011.
The grants by the Film Foundation are rarely awarded to first-timers, so this is a rare honor.
More news about the film project as it develops further.
After releasing his debut album last November singer-songwriter Tapio Ylinen, who is also educated in the dramatic arts, takes on the challenge of directing a theater piece, his first since 2008 and fifth overall.
The play in question is by none other than the master of satire: Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut’s play “Happy Birthday Wanda June” was originally written in the early 60’s and performed on Broadway. The play has never been performed in Finland so Vonnegut fans are in for a rare treat.
The performance premieres on March 5th at the Student Theater in Tampere (Tampereen Ylioppilasteatteri). More details to be annouced later.

The album “Nuoruus” (Youth) is an themed album of song about the hard reality of what it is to grow up, to become and adult in a world where youth is king. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Tapio takes his listeners back to the past, to the 70’s (the golden age of innovative rock music) both in his composition and the overall sound of the album. He combines influences from the great singer-songwriters (Jackson Browne, Sting, Crosby Stills & Nash), the big rock bands (Pink Floyd, Kansas, Dire Straits) and the guitar heroes (Eric Clapton, David Gilmour).
All song have been written and produced by the man himself (with the exception of the title song “Nuoruus” with lyrics by the late great poet Arto Melleri). He also plays all the intruments on the album.
The album is also a celebration of the 5th anniversary of Eclipse Music.
Tapio Ylinen is taking part in a remix contest by 70’s prog-rock legend Mike Oldfield and Indaba Music.
