Eclipse Music continues its series of world class jazz releases with “Aleatoric”, the new album by the trio consisting of pianist Aki Rissanen, saxophone virtuoso Robin Verheyen and drummer Markku Ounaskari.

“Aleatoric” is music in the here and now. The entire album was recorded during a special, live, one-day studio session. The term aleatoric refers to composing and making by means of chance and coincidence. And even though a lot of the material here is composed, the element of chance is the defining one on this album. Just like many of the all time classic jazz albums, “Aleatoric” captures, like a musical photograph, a special moment in the recording history of these great musicians. The music is new and fresh but, at the same time, the method of making this album is deeply rooted in the best tradition of classic jazz.

In addition to his high merits in the Solo Piano Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival pianist Aki Rissanen is best known for his works with Verneri Pohjola, Jukka Perko and the UMO Jazz Orchestra. Robin Verheyen has received critical acclaim both in his native Belgium and for his career in New York City. Drummer Markku Ounaskari is well respected all over Europe and has recorded, among others, for the legendary ECM record label.

Tapio Ylinen has received a recognition from the Finnish Film Foundation. He is to receive a grant for his feature film script “The Talented One”, a story about a washed-up rock star who gets a second chance in the music business when he is chosen to mentor a talented but restless young rock singer. The script is Ylinen’s first feature film script. He received a master of arts degree in film screenwriting from the University of Salford, Manchester in 2011.

The grants by the Film Foundation are rarely awarded to first-timers, so this is a rare honor.

More news about the film project as it develops further.

After releasing his debut album last November singer-songwriter Tapio Ylinen, who is also educated in the dramatic arts, takes on the challenge of directing a theater piece, his first since 2008 and fifth overall.

The play in question is by none other than the master of satire: Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut’s play “Happy Birthday Wanda June” was originally written in the early 60′s and performed on Broadway. The play has never been performed in Finland so Vonnegut fans are in for a rare treat.

The performance premieres on March 5th at the Student Theater in Tampere (Tampereen Ylioppilasteatteri). More details to be annouced later.

Singer-songwriter, producer and founder of the record label Eclipse Music mr. Tapio Ylinen releases his debut album on November 30th and celebrates the release with a concert in Helsinki’s Sture-21 on the same day.

A preview show will be held on November 22nd at Musiikkiteatteri Palatsi in Tampere, starting at 7PM.

The album “Nuoruus” (Youth) is an themed album of song about the hard reality of what it is to grow up, to become and adult in a world where youth is king. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Tapio takes his listeners back to the past, to the 70′s (the golden age of innovative rock music) both in his composition and the overall sound of the album. He combines influences from the great singer-songwriters (Jackson Browne, Sting, Crosby Stills & Nash), the big rock bands (Pink Floyd, Kansas, Dire Straits) and the guitar heroes (Eric Clapton, David Gilmour).

All song have been written and produced by the man himself (with the exception of the title song “Nuoruus” with lyrics by the late great poet Arto Melleri). He also plays all the intruments on the album.

The album is also a celebration of the 5th anniversary of Eclipse Music.

Guitarist Markus Pesonen and his 11-piece ensemble Hendectet are starting off on a tour of Scandinavia in November.

Markus Pesonen Hendectet is an energetic eleven-piece orchestra consisting of young and talented improvisors from Copenhagen and Berlin. The music is written especially for the musicians involved, tailored to each individual’s personality and special skills. The music bears many influences that range from jazz to noise, the Beatles to Schönberg, all brought together in a new and exciting fashion by relying on a wide palette of sounds and atmospheres. Improvisation plays a big part in the music and its use in different ways is a key element in Pesonen’s composing.

On May 19th Elifantree played a live studio concert on the “Lauantaijatsit” program on Bassoradio network. Here’s the podcast version of that live show. The show is 90 minutes long, Elifantree starts at 36 minutes and 50 seconds into the show. Big thanks to Matti Nives!

The new Elifantree album “Time Out” has been received extremely well thus far. With featured articles in both Suomen Kuvalehti and Helsingin Sanomat and now a great review at MTV3′s website the band has taken great leaps forward.

Also, for those of you who are able to watch Finnish TV, check out Pixel on YLE FEM this Friday (May 18th) at 8.30pm. Elifantree is featured on the program.

Oh, and if you don’t already own your copy of the record, get your copy here!

Elifantree was recently featured in “Suomen Kuvalehti” magazine. The story had a title (rough translation) “Almost family”, refering to the fact that the band members has such strong ties to each other. I think we can all agree that it’s just that what we can hear at the gigs and on the album. Loving it!

Last year, in April 2011, Eclipse Music had the honor of being represented at the annual Jazzahead conference in Bremen, Germany. Jazzahead is a showcase festival with up-coming bands performing to industry professionals to give an idea of their potential in the live arena. I submitted Elifantree into concideration for the European Jazz Nights. Out of 400 bands from all over Europe they were selected to play.

Meanwhile Kari Ikonen, with whom I was planning on releasing an album he had recorded with his group Karikko, also submitted the aforementioned group into European Jazz Nights. They were also selected.

Even though a record label can only submit one band into each category, since Kari and I didn’t have a record deal at the time of the selection, by strange coinsidence Eclipse Music (a total beginner in those circles) became the only record label in the festival to have two bands playing a showcase. Not a bad way to make an entrance.

When arriving at the venue imagine our surprise when we found this statue (above). It’s a wooden elephant, an “elephant tree” if you will. Nice synchronicity.

We found some very nice grafitti art near the place we were staying. There’s always time for a spontenous photo session. This was taken with my old Nokia cellphone, so it’s a bit rough, but there’s a nice feeling in the picture.

Here’s a view from the street where we were staying at our friend’s apartment. (Thanks again Moritz!)

The show itself went very well. Here’s a blurred shot by yours truly. The band is totally kicking ass!

Even though the conference was mostly business and hard work, we still found time to relax a bit. Here’s me having a nice lunch…

Here’s Anni having a good laugh…

And here’s a member of the band who shall remain nameless…

Anyway… We had a great time and achieved great success. Elifantree has a second album out now and this year (2012) we have, again, a band playing at Jazzahead. This time it’s Defekt. As I’m writing this the festival is only a few days away. I’ll give you a full report when we return.

5 stars

The second album of Kauhukakara leaps a huge step forward towards the realms of lovely fantasies. The passed three years have certainly guided the young musicians towards higher planes on the arts of their trade. As the most evident signs of development I would claim more advanced compositions, even tighter thematic appearance of the album, broader use of additional instruments and more extensive use of lyrics in the singing. The album shimmers with musical sophistication and good-hearted humour familiar from the debut album, and time has not changed the basic principles of the sound drastically.

[ -- ]

Though the lyrics are sung in Finnish, I would dare to recommend this music for global listeners, as the record’s focus is directed to very sophisticated musical information, and there lyrics can be enjoyed also as a melodic instrument, missing their playful meanings should not hinder the listening enjoyment. There is a great variation on the use of instruments, and the compositions have very different principles. Yet these vivid variations create a solid and recognisable sound to the album. This sound has richened and matured to even lovelier directions from their fabulous debut record, and I liked the observation that all band members have composed songs on the album, strengthening the feeling of true friendly collaboration’s end result. The musical education is evident through quality of arrangements, ideas and solutions, and still the end result is not difficult sounding elitist avantgarde music, but very emotional, accessible and human. Thus my grandest recommendations of this album from this very promisingly growing brat for You.

Kari Ikonen has received the high honor of being nominated for the Teosto Award for his compositions on the album “The Helsinski Suite“.

The award, totaling 40 000€, will be devided among 1-4 of the nominees. The award ceremony will be held on April 12th at the Helsinki Music Centre.

We are happy to announce that the long awaited second album by Elifantree, entitled “Time Out” will be released in April. The album will be available for pre-order very soon. And in related news, Defekt is currently recording their second album and will be performing at this year’s Jazzahead festival in Bremen, Germany on April 21st. The show will feature Jusu Berghäll on saxophone as a special guest.

Also Tapio Ylinen, label manager of Eclipse Music, is currently recording his debut album which is due out some time next autumn.

Kauhukakara’s second album is receiving fantastic reviews. The latest 5 star review came from Pentti Ronkainen, who writes for several newspapers and suomijazz.com. Read his review here.

“LAULELMA. Kolmekymppinen Johanna Elina Sulkunen on maailmaa matkannut, muun muassa jazzia opiskellut sekä Tanskaan toistaiseksi asettunut laulaja-lauluntekijä, josta harva lienee kuullut yhtään mitään ennen tätä Kööpenhaminassa tehtyä ensilevyä.

Siksi myönteinen yllätys on odotettua suurempi.

Kymmenen englanninkielisen laulun Our Garden on kaikilta osilta erittäin yritteliäs kokonaisuus, jonka läpäisee lähes rikkumaton musiikillinen tyylitaju ja melankolinen tunnelma – alleviivaamattomana johtoäänenä Johanna Elinan taipuisa ja tumma altto.

Ensimmäisillä kerroilla hänen minimalistiset ja balladimaiset melodiansa saattavat vaikuttaa samasta teemasta työstetyiltä.

Mutta levyn monikansallinen kokoonpano – trumpetti, saksofoni, kitara, piano, basso, rummut – pystyy soittamaan vähemmästä enemmän typistämättä näitä nykyaikaisia laulelmia yhteen tai kahteen tyylilajiin.”

“An old sofa in a forest – album cover strikes the surreal tone with permeable boundaries between fantasy and reality. The lyrics are by nature seekers with existential questions about time and space, past, present and future. The music has an air of breathless wonder and pensive naivete. The duo Sarah Riedel and Joonas Kuusisto, vocals and bass, is a well-balanced foundation with just the right portioned addition of Anders Gabrielsson’s tenor saxophone. Sarah Riedel moves on a sliding scale varied between a sensitivity of Marilyn Monroe and Bjork or an extrovert music hall performer.”

Our new releases have created quite a buzz among music critics.

Kauhukakara’s new album received 5 stars from ProgArchives. Read the review here. You can also listen to the radio broadcast of their fantastic record release concert here.

Johanna Elina has also received great reviews. 4 stars from suomijazz.com! Read it here (in Finnish).

IMPORTANT NEWS!

Common Creature’s debut album out tomorrow!

In a way we have come full circle. Less than five years ago my friend Pauli and I discussed making the first Kauhukakara album. I had just started my career as an entrepreneur, after founding Eclipse Music. The company was originally intended to be a forum for my own musical adventures but, nevertheless, we decided publishing the album would be a good move for the both of us. Eclipse Music would publish Kauhukakara’s debut album. Very soon after this we would go on to publish bands like Laser, Skalle & Sharon, Elifantree, Defekt and Kari Ikonen & Karikko with great success.

By chance, or perhaps because of poetic justice, Kauhukakara would eventually become the first band to publish a second album with Eclipse Music. Four years and a dozen album after the first shaking steps of this company and the band we have both come a long way. The band’s music has matured from a promising debut of talented young musicians to a fantastic concept album by experienced professionals of the highest level. The company has matured from a small forum to a competitive force in the Scandinavian jazz scene.

I’m looking forward to what the next four or five years will bring to the music of Kauhukakara and the company. Will their third album mark another landmark in the history of Eclipse Music? I’m dying to find out.

Johanna Elina’s debut solo work “Our Garden” has received fantastic reviews in Denmark, the latest of which was on Politiken, one of their biggest newspapers. Check out the review here.

She’ll also be featured in Radio Moreeni on Thursday the 24th at 4pm Eastern European Time. Listen to the broadcast here.

This friday sees the release of Kauhukakara’s second album “Eläinten fanfaari” in Finland. Next friday, the 25th of November, the record will be released in Sweden and internationally. The band will also play a concert at the Nefertiti Jazz Club in Gothenburg. The concert can heard live on Swedish National Radio, Channel 2.

Also on the 25th Marcus Pesonen’s album HUM will be available in stores in Finland. The album has received several five star reviews already.

Both albums are available at the Eclipse Music Webstore.

Eclipse Music is delighted to announce three new autumn releases. Kauhukakara’s second album “Eläinten Fanfaari (Animal Fanfare)” is out November 18th followed by a record release concert in Gothenburg. The show held at Nefertiti will be broadcast live on Swedish radio.

Common Creature (Sarah Riedel & Joonas Kuusisto) will release their debut album “Daydreamers” on December 9th both in Finland and Sweden. More info on the touring schedule later.

Markus Pesonen Hendectet, previously only available from Unit Records (and receiving fantastic reviews!) will be out on Eclipse Music very shortly. More info on the release date very soon.

All of the afore mentioned titles will be available for pre-orders here.

Stay tuned!

- Tapio Ylinen, label Manager

A live version of Elifantree’s “Missa Inte Bussen” will be featured on BBC’s “Jazz On Radio 3″ -program next monday, September 5th starting at 11pm local time.

More information here.

There’s lots happening on the gig front.

Defekt will play two gigs this week. Today they are in Helsinki playing a show at Jazz Espa festival and then they are off to Denmark for the Aarhus Jazz Festival on the 14th.

Elifantree are playing two gigs next week. On Saturday the 23th they are at the Keitelejazz festival and on the 28th they will perfom at the Koster Music Festival in Sweden.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

“It was going to take something very special indeed to surpass let alone equal this show of strength, yet 12 Points! is all about camaraderie not competition, and with the audience palpably buzzing, they were ready for even more sonic exotica. This was ably supplied by hotly tipped Finnish trio Elifantree, fronted by flame-haired singer Anni Elif Egecioglu alongside pugnacious tenorist Pauli Lyytinen and hyper drummer Tatu Rönkkö, they created a sound much larger and wider than the sum of their parts.”

Elifantree continues successful touring. This is their first visit to African soil, as they play the Jazz au Chellah Festival on Saturday the 18th of June.

They continue their live shows in July, playing Helsinki on the 9th and the Keitelejazz Festival on the 23th. After that they are off to the east coast of Sweden, playing the Coster Chamber Music Festival on July 28th. Happy touring, guys!

“Kauniin melodinen pianoaloitus saa pääkopan sisukset siirtymään muistoihin. Sointuvan melodinen tummasävyinen vokalisointi lisää nostalgiasykettä. Ajatus vaeltaa hiljaa lipuvan Kiurujoen rantapuistoon. Aikaan, jolloin Runnin Rapujatsit olivat voimissaan. Aikaan, jolloin nostalgia ja musiikki kietoutuivat toisiinsa hellän kauniisti. Ilman kiirettä, ajattomasti ajassa… päätyen Neulatammen virkistäviin vesisuihkuihin….”

“I stumbled upon this album by sheer chance late this past fall. I think it was a case of judging a record by it’s cover — the mish mash of 80′s video game archetypes, pigs and a meat cleaver was intriguing. It turned out that this Scandanavian quartet of electric guitar, sax, acoustic bass, drums and various electronics made some pretty interesting music. The songs generally featured snaking melodies twisting and turning their way around, kind of like the little sprites on their album cover’s maze.”

“A gig by Elifantree is an assault on the senses, but not only in the physical sense. The band comprises a saxophonist and a percussionist, both male and both well versed in the rigors of all-out testosterone sound, who are equally matched by a female, whose vocals dominate the band’s ethos, as well as the surrounding ether.”

“Displaying a musical maturity and inventiveness well beyond their years, they have developed a cohesive ensemble identity through the deft combination of powerful individual voices. Egecioglu has developed her own vocal language, part pagan blues and part spiritual scat, and Lyytinen, a very talented young saxophonist, are strong enough musicians to thrive in this minimalistic environment and have devised seemingly limitless ways of combining voice and saxophone. Together with Rönkkö, who filled the musical spaces in a way that you didn’t yearn for a chords
or bass, or indeed notice their absence, they performed a set that was as visionary as it was other-worldly.”
